Rosie Hancock and Sam Gray were the stars of the first weekend of the Isle of Wight Junior Badminton Tournament.
The duo enjoyed a clean sweep of victories in the under 14’s and under 10’s competitions respectively. Rosie, in the under 14’s won the girls singles with a 15-3 win over Evie Afonso and then with Evie won the girls doubles round robin tournament, over Sophie Green and Isabelle Honnor, with maximum points.
She completed her hat-trick of titles with a mixed doubles win with Jack Hobbins, arguably the match of the day, as they defeated William Heritage and Evie 15-12, 14-15, 15-8.
In the under 10’s competition , Sam won the boys singles with an 11-2 win over Jasper Evans and then with brother George, won the boys doubles round-robin tournament over Harry Gwilliam and Jasper.
Finally, he and Freya McCarthy won the mixed doubles, over Aiden Tillbrook and Sarah Baggott.
Four other under 10’s titles were also decided, Emily Clow defeated Tia Kirwin 11-2 to take the girls title, before Emily teamed up with Sarah Baggott to win the girls doubles over Millie Evans and Charlotte Saunders.
In the plate contest Charlotte edge Millie 11-10 while Harry defeated George 11-6.
There were 12 entries in the strong under 14’s boys tournament, with William Heritage digging deep to beat former champion Jamie Sheath 15-11, while Aaron Scott-Roberts took the boys plate, beating Tom Rice 15-2.
Aaron paired with Jack Hobbins to win the boys doubles round-robin with maximum points, with Sam Woods and William only two points behind in second.
The Girls plate competition was won by Isabelle Honnor, who defeated Isabelle Rothwell 15-6.
