The boys Doubles was also a round Robin with the Runner ups being Jasper Evans and Max Coello on 14 points, the winners were Brothers Sam and George Gray on max points of 22, this is shaping up that the Gray brothers could dominate the future of these events much like the Honnors have done recently, only time will tell…
The Girls Doubles was won by Sarah Baggott and Georgia Crockett beating sisters Talia and Nina Coello 11-2, this was the first time that three of the girls had taken part in the tournament with only Sarah having played before ,this proved to be the advantage for Sarah and Georgia’s win.
The Mixed Doubles was won by Sam Gray and Sarah Baggott on 33 points beating into 2cnd place Max and Talia Coello, on 26 points…This gave a clean sweep for Sarah and Sam winning all three of there events..
The U14s Tournament also took place along side the U10s and first up was the Boys Singles, the final was between Leon Pitman and Jack Hobbins with Jack winning 15-7 and 15-11, this was a great win for Jack as he has only just moved up to this age group after winning the U12s last year ! There was also a plate event ,with the Winner Tom Rice beating Aarron Abraham 15-12 and 15-14..
The Girls Singles event was between Rosie Hancock and Isabelle Honnor, with some great rallies played Rosie was too strong for Isabelle in this event with Rosie winning 15-3 and 15-2, there was also a plate competition with Lilly Green and Lacey Gulliver ,which saw Lacey win 15-3, 15-10, Lilly showed great strength in the 2cnd game and put up a tough battle for Lacey…

Rosie and Victoria were awarded 2nd place on count back as they had beaten Sarah and Lacey earlier 15-11. There was no question about the winners though ,Isabelle Honnor and Evie Afonso , who won all there games and finished on max points of 45.
The last and best event of the day was the Mixed Doubles, this saw 2 groups of 4 play in a round robin event with the top 2 from each group going through to the Semi Finals, the results were Jack and Rosie  beat brother and sister Oliver and Emily Clow 15-4 and in the other semi final we saw Leon and Isabelle beat Leo Popov and Evie Afonso 15-5,,,This set us up for a great final, featuring the best players of the day teaming up to face each other !! The final was a best of 3 games and it needed all 3 games to see who would win, with Leon and Isabelle taking the first game 15-11 and then Jack and Rosie taking the 2nd game 11-15 ,This meant  a nail biting  deciding  3rd game which saw Leon and Isabelle win 15-10 to win the Mixed Title ! Over 60’s Masters season

The over 60’s “masters” team this season has been an absolute pleasure to captain, with a core of reliable and enthusiastic players turning out for every match that their busy calendars allowed, with only a couple of willing substitutes being brought in when necessary.

Match results have followed the expected pattern (in our age group we are generally only ‘club’ players facing teams who have grown up through the various ranks of County play) but I believe that we have without fail, managed to make the opposition work harder for their wins than they anticipated. Our ladies in particular have excelled, taking a number of rubbers over the season – and all four against Somerset! We mere men tried our best, pushed a number of pairs to very close games, but never quite achieved the final results.

Despite this, it has been a thoroughly enjoyable season, with much humour and laughter along the way – which (at the end of the day) is what the game should be all about! Our grateful thanks therefore go to everyone who took part, and here is to more of the same next season.

CHRIS MASSEY WINS TREBLE IN LEVELS

The 2014 IW Badminton Championships were held over the weekend 19th to 21st September at Fairway Sports Centre. The Singles events were held on the Friday evening and attracted a good number of entries in both the men’s and ladies events.  In the men’s event the finalists were the same as last year  Stuart Isaacs the holder and Chris Massey and this time Chris proved too strong for Stuart winning in straight sets 21-8  21-9. The ladies final featured two previous holders of the title Sally Isaacs and Jane Jackson. This was a close three setter with Sally eventually winning 17-21, 21-12, 21-11. There was a plate in the men’s event and this was won by up and coming young player Jacob Honnor beating Richard Gray in the final 21-16, 21-15

Saturday saw the men’s Ladies’ and Mixed events being keenly contested. After a lot of good badminton the winners were, in the Men’s double Chris Massey and Dom Aphonso who beat the holders Stuart Isaacs and Kes Downer 27-25 21-14. The current holders Gill Bushell and Denise Insley retained their title beating Jane Jackson and Debbie Honnor 21-16, 21-18. In the mixed doubles Chris Massey and Karen Murrant beat Kes Downer and Denise Insley 222-20 21-11.

This meant that Chris Massey had completed a clean sweep of all the trophies emulating Stuart Isaacs the previous year.

A minutes silence was held on the finals day in memory of a stalwart player and supporter of Island Badminton Dave Wedge who passed away earlier in the week after a long illness.
