Jack Hobbins, Evie Afonso & Jacob Honnor were the big winners from the second round of the Isle of Wight Junior Badminton Tournament, at the Fairway Sports Complex.
Jack took a hat-trick of wins in the under 12’s competition, defeating Aaron Scott-Roberts in the singles final 15-11, 15-8, before teaming up with Aaron to win the doubles in a round-robin tournament with maximum points. Nicholas Early and Richo Hadibroto were second.
Jack completed the sweep by winning the mixed doubles with Evie Afonso in a round-robin, again on maximum points. Sam Gray, playing in an older age group, and Isabelle Honnor were second.
In the girls under 12’s Evie won the singles, beating Isabelle 15-13, before the pair teamed up to win the doubles, beating Lilly Green and Sarah Baggott 15-5, 15-10, in the final and these with her mixed win with Jack also gave her a clean sweep.
The boy’s plate competition was won by Oliver Clow, who beat Richo Hadibroto 15-10.
In the under 16’s tournament, Jacob Honnor also swept the board.
With a 15- strong entry in the singles, he beat Alfie Hancock 21-8, 21-11 to retain the title he won last year.
He and Alfie then teamed up to win the boys doubles, defeating Luke Joynes & Sam Woods 21-15, 21-7 in the semi-final and Jordan Aspinal and Lucas Afonso in the final, 21-9, 21-11. Jordan and Luke made the final by beating Reece Widgery and Ted Blowers 21-7, 17-21, 21-10.
The hat-trick was complete in the mixed doubles when he and Lucy Baggott took maximum points in the round-robin tournament, with Alfie and his sister Rosie Hancock, second.
Having won the under 14’s tile two weeks earlier, Rosie won the under 16’s girls singles title beating Emily Boynton 21-16. She also won the girls doubles with Victoria Miles as they beat Emily & Lucy 21-20, 21-16.
The Boys singles plate was won by Sam Woods who beat Daniel Peach 21-11, an impressive win given he was playing in an older age group.
