Brothers and sisters did battle, and then put their rivalries aside in the final weekend of the IW Junior Badminton Tournament.
The under 21’s competition took place at the Fairway Sports complex, with three pairs of siblings, Matthew & Jacob Honnor, Alfie & Rosie Hancock & Sophie and Lucy Baggott, featuring heavily in the final results.
The men’s singles attracted a strong entry of 16, of whom 11 had represented the I.W at senior county level in the last year.
The semi-finals were between Angga Dewanatara and Jacob Honnor, which Angga battled through to win 21-20, 19-21, 21-17, while in the other semi-final Matthew Honnor defeated Daniel Parslow 21-14, 21-10.
Angga and Matthew both stepped up a gear for a thrilling final, which was won eventually by Matthew, 21-17, 21-19.The men’s singles plate final was won by Connor Ambrosini, who beat Connor Firth 21-14, 12-21, 21-16.
The ladies singles event was held as a round robin event , with Sophie Baggott edging out sister, Lucy by just four points for the tile. They then teamed up for the ladies doubles and won without dropping a game. Victoria Cave and Beth Wathan were second with Emily Boynton and Rosie Hancock third.
The men’s doubles had two groups of four, with two pairs going through from each group to the semi-final stage. Matthew and Jacob Honnor teamed up to play George Utteridge & Connor Ambrosini, the latter pair booking their place in the final, winning 21-15, 19-21, 21-17.
The other semi-final saw Angga Dewanatara and Hasma Hadibroto defeat Connor Firth and Alfie Hancock 21-14, 21-16.
The final went to George and Connor who came back from 20-18 down to win the first game 21-20 before winning the second set 21-15.
A round-robin mixed doubles event concluded the day and the tournament for another year, and this was won by James Phillips and Sophie, winning from Jacob and Lucy second. Alfie and Rosie were third.
