League Season 20/21

Hi all,
I Hope this letter finds you well and coping with the uncertain times we have been through
and are facing.
As we have seen with a lot of sports lately, we believe we should start to make plans for the
return of league badminton. These plans will always be subject to change and in accordance
with the Government and badminton England guidelines.
As you will be aware, in normal times each club should be advising me of the number of
teams they will be entering by the end of this Sunday 30th August. This will not be
happening and I will now advise you of the new structure for this season.
As a committee we have made the decision to delay the forthcoming season. So, to cope
with the reduced timescale we will set the amount of divisions to 4 or 5 (depending on the
number of teams entering) thus resulting in less matches to play per team.

Dates for the Forthcoming Season
This year’s season will begin, week commencing Monday 18th January 2021 (Guidelines
allowing).
I will be needing the number of teams each club will be entering into the 20/21 season by
13th December 2020.
I will be emailing out club details forms in the coming months but I do understand that some
clubs may struggle with details as they still have little idea of when they will be allowed to
return to normal play.
I do ask for all clubs to contact me if there is any change to their current hall availability
status so I can continue to plan for the forthcoming season.
Many thanks,
Clayton Simpson.
(League Secretary)

Covid 19 – Coronavirus

Following today’s announcement by the Prime Minister & Public Health England regarding the spread of Covid 19  – Coronavirus,  the Isle of Wight Badminton Association Committee recognises the need for social distancing measures within the community to try and prevent the transmission of the disease.

We have therefore taken the decision to suspend the League, Mallett Cup & County training, both Senior & Juniors until 5th April when we will review the situation again.

The Junior County Match against Hastings on 21st March has been postponed until later in the year and the Over 45’s county match against Wiltshire 2 on Sunday 29th March has also been cancelled.

Richard Gray – Chairman

50th Cap for Sophie

The Isle of Wight Senior County Squad followed up their excellent start to the season having beaten Somerset 7-4 and Dorset 4, 6-5 in the opening weekend of the Senior County Championships with two defeats. The Island side went down 9-2 to a strong Hampshire side with Kes Downer/James Phillips & David Anderson/Yoaan Belon picking up the only two games of the match. The final match of the day against Herefordshire was a closer affair going down to the final two mixed games. James & Lucy Baggott pulled of a good victory beating their opponents 21-16, 21-18 but defeat for Kes & Sophie Baggott resulted in a 6-5 defeat.

The team was Sophie Baggott, Lucy Baggott, Rosie Hancock, Jessica Gilbert, David Anderson, Yoann Belon, Kes Downer, Stuart Isaacs & James Phillips

It was a day of mixed fortunes with Stuart Isaacs breaking his back in two places forcing him out. We all wish Stuart a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on court in the not to distant future.

Congratulation must go to Sophie who played her 50th Cap for the Island and received a well deserved cake from the team.

The team that kicked the Hornet nest

20160515_16263317  members of the IOW Junior Badminton Development Squad travelled to Havant on Sunday 15th May to compete in a mixed ability open tournament hosted by the “Havant Hornets” junior badminton club. They were supported on the day by various family members, as well as Richard Gray, senior county team manager and coach and Keith Hobbins, junior development  secretary and lead coach. 31 people travelled in total.

It was a long day with the kids playing between 8 and 10 matches each depending on the numbers in their groups.

There were approx 100 competitors in total who were split into beginners, experienced club players and more experienced players, including  many who play at county level. The players in each of the groups were very well matched (well done the organisers) and all the matches were played with a very high degree of focus and determination as well as skill and athleticism.

Between them the island players won 6 individual and 2 pairs silver medals as well as exceptional performances from Oliver Clow,  who won all of his games to take individual gold and Isabelle Honnor and Lacey Gulliver who won their pairs gold.

Sam Collings, despite never having trained with the squad, paired up with another relatively new player Curtis Thompson and put on an excellent display of team work and effort to also take their  pairs gold.

Despite the very high standard of play on display the highlight of the day came after the tournament had finished. At the end of the presentation of trophies and medals a special trophy was awarded to an individual, chosen by the coaches and officials, who might not be the best player but who demonstrated the best attitude and approach to their game, showed respect and consideration to their opponents and the officials and who played with a permanent smile on their face.” I am very proud to say that the Player Of The Day Award went to another absolute beginner from the IOW, Georgia Crockett. Well done Georgia”.
